Trick or Treat??

Does anyone else remember trick-or-treating back in the day? It seemed like the streets were crawling with hundreds of kids. You would have to wait for the group in front of you to grab their treats before you could make your way to the porch for your turn. It was usually cold but you were always hustling and bustling around so much it didn’t bother you. Your voice was hoarse from screaming “trick or treat” as loud as you could over and over again. If you were smart you had a pillow case instead of a dinky little bag, and if you were truly dedicated, you usually came home with a few scraped up knees and had a grand excuse for why you didn’t get your butt home on time. The joy of dumping out all of that candy and carefully separating it all into priority piles was quickly faded with the belly ache from eating too many treats. You had so much candy it lasted days, weeks even! And you had it carefully hidden so noone else could raid the best ones you saved for last. It was quite an event.

With all of the GMO news going around, I still think it’s a little overrated and believe that most things can be enjoyed in moderation without harmful effects. There are claims that most of the popular candy is made with genetically modified corn (which I believe) but again, indulging on a few little candy bars on Halloween won’t hurt. Special occasions are one thing, but when each house has to stock up on bags and bags of candy, and kids are hitting up as many houses as they can, that’s when moderation crosses the line. So this year I have come up with  a list of things you can pass out to the kids instead of candy.

  • pencils
  • mini water bottles
  • mini bags of fruits/veggies (carrots, apple slices, etc)
  • small bags of pretzels
  • stickers
  • temporary tattoos
  • apples
  • small toys bought in bulk at party stores (yo yo’s, bouncy balls, etc.) *make sure they are age appropriate and are not a choking hazard to the little ones!
  • glow sticks/necklaces/bracelets
  • toothbrushes
  • floss
  • crayons
  • note pads
  • mini pumpkins

Hopefully you won’t get egged, but parents will thank you.

I found a cute idea, and am going to hand out clementines with jack-o-lantern faces colored on them. Can’t wait to see the kids reactions!

Banana Protein Pancakes

{ Serves 2-3 }

1 mashed, super ripe banana
2 eggs
Oil for the pan (coconut oil is my pref)

My additions: a bit of pumpkin pie spice, 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed [this really, really holds the mixture together], a bit of vanilla, & a dash of cinnamon.

Optional: all-natural maple syrup + berries

+ Directions: mash your banana with a fork. In another bowl whisk eggs. Mix eggs & banana together. Add my additions. Put your choice of oil on a pan (low-medium heat). Add a silver dollar-sized amount to the pan. Let the cake set for 30 seconds & flip it! Enjoy!!

Half Marathon day!!!

6:15am- 1/2 Larabar
6:45am- Park City Half Marathon (1:47) not a PR, but it was amazingly beautiful!!
9:45am- the other 1/2 of my Larabar, Muscle Milk
11:45am- Plum, cherry tomatoes
1:00pm- world best kale salad
2:00pm- swimming
5:00pm- turkey breast
6:00pm- (here I go falling off the wagon for the weekend) 4″ turkey sammy from Subway with veggies, oil and vinegar
8:00pm- beer and a few shots, chicken nachos

I totally feel guilty and should have kept myself in check. Hindsite is 20/20. But on a lighter note, take a look at this bomb ass kale salad! I need bigger salad bowls to hold all the veggies I stuff in there!

BLAST!

I cannot wait for dinner tonight! I am serving up BLAST’s at my house (it’s a BLT with swiss cheese and avocado). I love these sammy’s and look forward to them all summer. It’s harvest season and everyone who planted a garden this year is swimming in tomatoes, so bring some  my way we’ll have a BLAST! It’s really a no-brainer, but here is the “recipe”:

  • 2 slices whole grain bread, toasted
  • turkey bacon (B)
  • lettuce (L)
  • avocado slices (A)
  • slice of swiss cheese (S)
  • tomato slices (T)
  • and a teeny tiny bit of lite mayo

100 Day Photo Challenge

Happy (belated) Valentine’s Day!

Happy belated Valentine’s Day. Sorry for not checking in yesterday, I was too busy daydreaming. Just kidding, I was thinking about you I promise! I hope you all had a beautiful day! It was a gorgeous day here in SLC. I think it may have reached 60 degrees. I just have to brag about the dinner my husband made for us! Parmesan crusted tilapia, rice with quinoa, asparagus and a spinach salad. Even our toddler liked it! I’ll admit, I splurged and had some candy. Hello? It’s a holiday and holiday’s are meant to be celebrated! Therefor I ran my ass of on the dreadmill this morning and threw away the rest of the reeses pb cups that were staring me in the face this morning. Live, laugh and love…that is what this life is for.

 

Meteorologists, I could do that!

I swear, meteorologists are never right. Makes me think I could do their job! Actually, I know better and have a lot of respect for them. But today, they were wrong…again! It is a winter wonderland out there. I am not complaining one bit and for the record, can not stand it when people who live in Utah complain about snow. Deal with it. Or better yet, learn to love it! I don’t enjoy soggy socks, bad traffic or frostbite either, but there is so much more to it than that. Why on earth would you live in such a beautiful state and not (at least try to) take up the many winter sports that are offered. Be optimistic, look at the many opportunities that are out there for you to have FUN! Really, I mean A LOT OF FUN!

Here are some sports and how many calories a 150 pound adult would burn during each hour of beautiful winter fun-ness!

  • Cross Country Skiing, 545 calories
  • Snow Shoeing: 545 calories
  • Hockey: 500 calories
  • Ice Skating: 500 calories
  • Snow Boarding: 500 calories
  • Skiing: 500 calories
  • Sledding (give or take depending on the hill):  475 calories
  • Shoveling snow: 408 calories
  • Curling: 270 calories
  • Snowmobiling: 240 calories

Trying Something New

Sorry if you missed me yesterday. I had a busy day and had to teach at night, so by the time I got home I was exhausted. I have been talking to Sonia, the owner of Salt Lake Adventure Bootcamp about possibly helping her out a couple of days out of the week with her bootcamp classes. So encouraged me to attend this morning to get a feel for it. It was awesome! I was placed in a group of 5 and between us, we performed HUNDREDS of kettelbell swings,  jacks, rows, laps, squat thrusts, donkey kicks, good mornings, turkish getups, wall slams, suicides and jumprope rotations. These classes are no joke and I have only been to one! I am really looking forward to next week, making new friends and testing myself.

If you’d like to come check it out, I highly recommend it! You can join anytime, and Sonia will pro-rate your fee according to the number of days left in the month. You can sign up for 3, 4 or 5 day a week schedules. It is a fun group, women only, of all ages and abilities. You work hard, you work together and you feel great for the entire rest of the day and will leave you wanting more, I promise!
